Candidate Statement

Hello, neighbors! My name is Amy Groves and I am running for Town Constable.

I moved to Massachusetts in 1982 and have enjoyed living in Hopkinton since 1999. I’ve been active in civic affairs, always participating in local elections and town meetings. For five years, I have been a member of the Hopkinton Sustainable Green Committee, and I am currently Vice Chair. I contributed to the Climate Action Plan and helped get the Net Zero Resolution and the Specialized Building Code passed at town meeting. Also for town meeting I organized and presented a successful citizen’s petition to change the Board of Selectmen to the Select Board. I served for six years on the Hopkinton Cultural Council until I hit term limits, and I am now working with a bootstrap group to create a Cultural District stretching from the HCA through downtown and on to the future International Marathon Museum. Recently I joined the Board of Directors of the Metrowest Symphony Orchestra, which has performed numerous times in Hopkinton. You can always find me at Polyarts, at Hopkinton 101, and outside the Middle School on election days. I’m the one in the hat.

Hopkinton has two types of constables: appointed and elected. Appointed constables are bonded and can serve papers, but the duty of elected constables is to post notices of upcoming elections and town meetings in prominent locations throughout the town. The amount of time spent performing this task each year is relatively small, but I believe that the job is an important one because if we want to encourage citizen engagement, we must use all available means of communication to reach people.

Currently I am a Software Solutions Architect at IBM. I work from home with a fairly flexible schedule, so if elected I will be available to perform my duties reliably during the day or evening. Mostly I believe I am suited to the job because I recognize its importance.

I respectfully ask for your vote, and above all urge you to mark your calendars for the local town election on May 19, 2025, 7 am to 9 pm, Middle School Gym.
